Size guide: how our brands fit
Compare sizes across the brands we carry. We use each brand's own chart plus fit notes from riders and tack shops.
Breeches & tights
Compare by waist, or by a pair that fits you: the same label number means different things in different brands. Find my size
How to measure
Measure your natural waist (the narrowest part, usually just above the belly button) and the fullest part of your hips, over underwear, with the tape snug but not tight. Low-rise breeches sit below the natural waist, so riders often go by hips for those. Then compare your number with the brand rows below, not the number on your favorite pair.
How to measure breeches laid flat
Measured laid flat and buttoned, in inches, the same way as our measured listings. Fasten the waistband, smooth out wrinkles without stretching, and don't double the numbers.
- Waist: straight across the top of the waistband, fastened, not stretched.
- Front rise: from the crotch seam up the center front seam to the top of the waistband.
- Inseam: from the crotch seam down the inside leg seam to the bottom of the leg.
Most listings aren't measured yet: only selected items are, mostly higher-end and some new ones. If a listing shows measurements, compare them with yours, and read its fit note if it has one.
Listing numbers are one side only (not doubled), so a flat waist is about half the waist around.
Why "size 26" isn't one size
RJ Classics says their 26 is a 26" waist; Kerrits' 26 fits a 26–28" waist; Romfh's 26 is a 28" waist; Dover's Tailored Sportsman chart lists a 26 at 30". And Animo IT 38, Kingsland EU 36, Schockemöhle EU 36, Pikeur EU 38 and Ariat EUR 36 are all published as a "24". Go by your measurements.

Fit notes & sources
- retailer/consensus Retailer found the Katja "came up a standard fit". (The Spoilt Horse Company)
- retailer/consensus "Some of the Kingsland clothing comes up about half a size smaller than most standard sizes." (The Spoilt Horse Company)
- brand official Kingsland labels breeches by body shape: H (narrow upper body and hips), A (narrow upper body, wider hips), X (hourglass). (Kingsland Equestrian)
- retailer/consensus A US retailer lists the Kingsland Kadi as 24 (EU 32), 26 (EU 34), 28 (EU 36), 30 (EU 38), 32 (EU 40), which doesn't match the UK number on Kingsland's own chart (EU 36 = UK 24), so we don't show a US size for Kingsland. (Mary's Tack & Feed)
The UK number on Kingsland labels (e.g. UK 24) is a breech number, not a UK dress size.

Tall boots
Match on foot size, calf and height. US women's sizes first, brand codes next to them. Find my size
How to measure tall boots

How we measure a boot
- Height: We stand the boot upright on a flat floor and measure straight up the back, from the floor to the top edge. Our boot height always includes the heel. If the boot has a taller outside edge, ask us for that height too.
- Calf width: The circumference at the widest part of the calf, with the tape level.
Want numbers for a boot you're eyeing? Ask us for measurements on any boot at hello@tackandtweed.com.
How to measure your leg
- Wear your breeches and riding socks.
- Height: Sit in a straight chair with feet flat and knees at 90°, then measure from the floor behind your heel to the back of your knee.
- Calf: Measure around the widest part of your calf, tape level.
- Measure both legs and use the larger number.
- Measure in inches or cm. We're happy to convert.
Comparing the numbers
- Measure up the back, not the front or sides. That's the standard way boot height is measured.
- Tall boots settle about 1–2 cm with wear, so allow a little extra height.
- A used boot may already have dropped, so it may need less allowance than a new pair. Not sure? Ask us.

US women's sizes from Parlanti International's US/EU shoe conversion chart. Whole US sizes (5, 6, 7…) fall between two EU sizes on that chart (e.g. US 8 = EU 38–39). Tucci, DeNiro and EGO7 don't publish their own US conversion that we found, so we use Parlanti's chart as a guide for them; Tredstep uses its own conversion. EU sizes without a chart match show "US equivalent not found yet".
Source: Parlanti International
How boot codes work
Boot codes are brand-specific: Parlanti "41 MH+" (EU 41, M calf, tallest height), Tucci "40XE" (EU 40, 48 cm tall, 31–33.4 cm calf), DeNiro "38 MA S" (EU 38, medium-tall height, S calf). Similar letters don't mean similar boots.
Parlanti
What to wear: Parlanti asks for the breeches and socks you normally ride in, and leg height barefoot or in socks. (Parlanti) (Parlanti International)

Half chaps & full chaps
Measure your leg, then compare with the brand's chart. How to measure in the Fit Finder
The Fit Finder doesn't suggest a chap size yet. Brands measure chap height differently (Ariat matches its sizes to your own leg height, while Riding Warehouse notes Ovation's heights are the chap's own length), so please compare your numbers with the charts below.
How to measure for half chaps
- Wear the breeches or tights and riding socks you ride in. Measure the calf over your breeches, not on a bare leg. (Dover Saddlery) (Ariat) (Ariat half chaps chart)
- Sit on a chair, feet flat and knee at 90°, and ask a helper to measure. (Dover Saddlery) (Ariat)
- Calf: around the widest part of the calf, over your breeches. (Dover Saddlery) (Ariat)
- Height: from the floor to the back of the knee (the tendon behind it), in your socks with no shoes. If you measure in your paddock boots instead, take off the heel height, as Ariat's fitting guide says. (Dover Saddlery) (Ariat) (Ariat half chaps chart)
- Try them on over the paddock boots you'll ride in. New half chaps should feel very snug, with any elastic panel stretched; they ease with wear, and a pair that's loose at first gets baggy. (Dover Saddlery) (Ariat half chaps chart)
How to measure for full chaps
The measuring method is from Hobby Horse, a US show chap maker (its own chart is for western show chaps), and the measurements Parlanti's English full chap chart lists.
- Wear your riding breeches and riding socks (Parlanti), plus the belt and boots you ride in (Hobby Horse). Ask a friend to measure while you stand.
- Waist (only if the chart lists it): at the bottom edge of your belt. (Hobby Horse) Hips: none of the full chap charts we found list a hip size; if a brand's chart does, measure around the fullest part of your hips.
- Upper thigh: around the fullest part, over your breeches. (Hobby Horse) (Parlanti)
- Calf: around the widest part, over your breeches. (Parlanti)
- Inseam: from the crotch down the inside of the leg to the floor, with your boots on. (Hobby Horse) Parlanti lists inside and outside lengths and asks for leg measurements barefoot or in socks, so check how the chart you use measures. (Parlanti)
- Don't add extra to your numbers unless the brand says to; Hobby Horse, for example, says its chart already allows for fit. (Hobby Horse)
These are general measuring tips gathered from the brands and retailers credited above, not a guarantee of fit. Brands measure in different ways, so always check the brand's own size chart and our return policy before buying. Brand names are used only to identify their sizes; Tack & Tweed isn't affiliated with or endorsed by these brands.
Ariat half chaps inches, men's and women's
What to wear: Ariat says to measure the calf over your riding pants. Its chart says height in bare feet; its fitting guide says you can wear your breeches, socks and boots and take off the heel height. (Ariat half chaps chart) (Ariat)
Width = calf, height = floor to the back of the knee in bare feet. Ariat says half chaps should fit very snugly. Concord and Oxford half chaps have their own chart on the same page.

Show coats
Compare by bust, or by a coat that fits you. Watch for Grand Prix, which uses Old World sizes. Find my size
How to measure
Measure the fullest part of your bust and your natural waist, wearing what you'd wear under the coat. Sleeve and back length matter as much as bust in the show ring, so if you're between sizes, lean on the brand's fit notes.
How to measure a coat laid flat
Measured laid flat and buttoned, in inches, the same way as our measured listings. Smooth out wrinkles without stretching, and don't double the numbers.
- Pit to pit: face up, straight across the front from underarm seam to underarm seam.
- Shoulder: face down, across the back from shoulder seam to shoulder seam (where the sleeve joins).
- Sleeve: from the shoulder seam at the top of the sleeve, down the outside of the sleeve to the end of the cuff.
- Back length: face down, from the collar seam at center back straight down to the hem (for tails or vents, to the bottom of the back).
- Waist: face up, straight across the narrowest point of the waist.
Most listings aren't measured yet: only selected items are, mostly higher-end and some new ones. If a listing shows measurements, compare them with yours, and read its fit note if it has one.
Match the shoulder too if you can: it's the hardest part to alter. Differences under about ½" can be sewing or measuring variation.
- retailer/consensus Proper Cloth doesn't recommend altering a jacket's shoulder width ("a complex and expensive alteration"). (Proper Cloth)
- retailer/consensus Proper Cloth accepts ±0.3" on jacket shoulder, back length and sleeve and ±0.4" on chest width between garments of the same size, so differences under about ½" can be sewing or measuring variation. (Proper Cloth)
Grand Prix & European sizes
Grand Prix is the big one to know: Dover says to order three sizes up from your US size (US 6 = GP 12). And European conversions disagree: Cavalleria Toscana maps IT 42 to US 6 while the Samshield chart we found maps IT 42 to US 8.

Show shirts & tops
Most riders shop by letter size. Here's how each brand's XS–XXL compares. Find my size
How to size
Most riders shop show shirts and tops by letter size (XS, S, M, L, XL, XXL), and that works well within a brand. Letter sizes aren't identical across brands, so where a brand publishes a chart we show its US dress size and chest measurement. To compare, measure around the fullest part of your bust, under the arms. For collars, measure around your neck where the collar sits and add a finger's width.
Letter sizes at a glance
US dress size and chest (body measurement unless marked "shirt") for each brand's letter sizes. "Runs small" notes are only shown where a source says so.

Match your head circumference to a hat size, then check the shape notes. Find my size
How to measure
Wrap a soft tape around your head about 1 cm (a finger's width) above your eyebrows and ears, at the widest point. Take it twice. Then think about shape: most heads are oval, but a round head will feel pressure at the sides of a standard-fit helmet.

US hat sizes come from One K's chart as published by Jeffers (51–62 cm) and Samshield's liner sizes as published by Valencia Saddlery (51–64 cm). On those charts US hat sizes run ⅛ larger than the Charles Owen (UK) size for the same head, e.g. 56 cm = US 7 = UK 6⅞. The hat sizes on Charles Owen's chart are English (UK) sizes; Equus calls this column "English helmet size". Charles Owen labels its helmets this way, including on its US site.

Why a "5 inch" bit can differ
Labels differ by maker: Neue Schule calls 5" 127 mm and 5¼" 133 mm, while Sprenger labels 125 mm as 5" and 135 mm as 5¼". A "5 inch" bit can differ by a few millimetres between brands.
Fit notes & sources
- brand official Measure inside edge to inside edge. Going from a loose ring to a fixed cheek, size down ¼"; the reverse, size up ¼". (Neue Schule)
- retailer/consensus Loose rings need an extra ⅛–¼"; if between sizes, size up. (The Bit Boutique)
- retailer/consensus Common thicknesses are 14/16/18 mm; a thinner mouthpiece (14–16 mm) suits a horse with little room between the jaws. (Houghton Country (Sprenger size guide))
- retailer/consensus SmartPak lists standard horse widths as 5", 5¼", 5½" and thicknesses of 14–18 mm. (SmartPak)

Frequently asked questions
Tap a question to see the answer.
Why doesn't my usual breech size work in European brands?
Because there isn't one standard. Italian, French and German labels each start at a different number, and even the "US" numbers differ: RJ Classics' 26 is a 26-inch waist, Romfh's 26 is a 28-inch waist, and Ariat's own tights chart pairs breech size 22–24 with a 26–27-inch waist. Measure your waist and hips and compare them with the brand's chart.
How accurate is the Fit Finder?
It is only as good as the charts behind it. When both brands publish body measurements, it compares those directly. When one brand only publishes label conversions, it tells you the match is rough. Cuts also vary by model, and used items may have stretched or been altered, so read the brand's fit notes too.
What size do your listings show?
The size from the item's label. Use that brand's chart and fit notes in this guide to see how it's likely to fit you. Used items may have stretched, dropped (boots) or been altered, so keep the fit notes in mind. See our return policy.
Should I size up in tall boots?
Usually not for height. New boots are meant to feel tall and snug; Parlanti says its boots drop 1.5–2 cm on average and Tucci suggests adding 1–1.5 cm to your measured height. A pre-owned boot has usually already dropped some, so it may sit a little lower than the brand's chart suggests.
I'm between helmet sizes. What should I do?
Charles Owen suggests rounding up or, ideally, trying both. Head shape matters as much as size: if a helmet presses at the sides, a round-fit model in your usual size is usually better than going up a size. For safety reasons, helmets can't be returned, so measure carefully before you buy. See our return policy.
How do I convert bit sizes between millimetres and inches?
Measure inside edge to inside edge. Neue Schule lists 5 inches as 127 mm and 5¼ as 133 mm, while Sprenger labels 125 mm as 5 inches and 135 mm as 5¼, so check the millimetre figure when comparing brands. Moving from a loose ring to a fixed cheek, many riders go down about ¼ inch. Bits can't be returned, so measure your current bit before you buy. See our return policy.
What size bridle does my horse need?
Most bridles come in Pony, Cob, Full and Extra Full, but brands differ. As a rough guide, a Full cavesson noseband is about 24–26 inches and a Full browband about 16½ inches. The best check is to measure your horse's current bridle and compare it with the typical sizes in this guide, keeping in mind that brands differ.
